South Sudan requests regional, int’l help on CPA implementation

September 28, 22007 (JUBA) — Sudan’s First Vice President and President of Southern Sudan Government , Salva Kiir Mayadrit told the visiting US envoy that regional and international bodies should be involved in the resolution of divergence over the implementation of peace agreement.

Salva Kiir Mayardit, has informed Andrew Natsios that it is necessary for the Naivasha partners, the National Congress Party and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, to sit together and resolve the outstanding issues regarding the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

He said the discussions should be conducted under the international community’s supervision represented in the UN, IGAD and the USA.

Natsios arrived in Khartoum on Wednesday September 26 for a 10 day visit, saying he wanted to review the progress made at resolving the 4½-year-old conflict in Darfur. And to discuss the implementation of the CPA which was brokered by Bush administration.

The minister for presidential affairs in the government of south Sudan, Luka Biong, said that Salva Kiir and Natsios held a long meeting on Thursday in Juba focusing on the dispute over Abyei and north south border demarcation.

He pointed out that South Sudan would be taking the initiative drafted by the British expert Douglas Johnson, in which he presented technical information about the borders between the north and South, as the basis for a solution to the issue.

Further, the visiting envoy and the Southern Sudan vice-president, Riek Machar discussed Darfur peace process, and efforts by Machar to persuade the leader of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement, Abdelwahid Mohamed al-Nur, to join Darfur peace talks scheduled in Tripoli on October 27.

They also discussed negotiations between Kampala and the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army led by Joseph Kony in which Juba is a mediator.
