UN reports more hijacks of vehicles in Sudan’s Darfur

October 3, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) reported on Wednesday that more vehicles of the UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations (INGO) had been hijacked in the war-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur.

Three armed men on Monday hijacked at gunpoint a UN vehicle in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, according to the report.

The Sudanese police, who were notified of the incident, pursued the hijackers but their attempt to stop the vehicle was unsuccessful and efforts to recover the vehicle are still ongoing.

Also on Monday, in North Darfur, an INGO truck was hijacked in the area of Kassab IDP camp in Kutum by armed bandits. The driver of the vehicle who was taken by the hijackers together with the truck has been located but the vehicle is still missing.

Last Sunday, three armed men hijacked an INGO vehicle in Nyala in South Darfur, 20 meters from the INGO warehouse.

Two staff members, who were on board of the vehicle and were forcibly taken and detained for 3 days by the hijackers, were subsequently released and contacted the INGO Tuesday from Umsalaya police station, some 30 km north of Nyala.

Upon arrival to Nyala, one of the staff members was admitted to Nyala hospital for a serious injury in the head.

Twenty soldiers of the African Union peacekeeping forces were killed or injured in an attack by unidentified armed men in South Darfur last weekend.

A joint investigation is currently being conducted by the UN and AU into the attack, which has been strongly condemned by the international community.
