Sudan former VP to mediate between SPLM and ruling party

October 14, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Reports from Khartoum indicate that consultations are underway to tap the former First Vice President of Sudan Abel Alier as a mediator in the current crisis between Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and National Congress Party (NCP).

The daily Al-Sudani newspaper reported that some figures from Southern Sudan are working on having Alier try to bridge the difference between SPLM and NCP.

Last Thursday the SPLM decided to suspend their participation in the national unity government because of what they describe as the NCP’s failure to fully implement crucial elements of the Comprehensive peace agreement (CPA).

The latest move by the SPLM raised concern that the CPA that ended two decades of civil war between the Arab and Muslim-dominated north and the mainly Christian and animist black southerners may unravel.

Several officials told Al-Sudani that Alier is a widely accepted figure with a proven track record of resolving major issues such as those during the Naivasha talks leading to the CPA.

Alier was instrumental in formulating the first peace agreement between the North and South in 1972 was signed in Addis Ababa. He became a Vice President of Sudan when during the years 1971-981.

A lawyer by profession Alier was the chairman of the committee that was established to investigate the helicopter crash that took the life of the former SPLM leader John Garang.

Alier is better known for a book he wrote in 1990 outlining the history of North in reneging on agreements they sign with the South.

The 2005 peace agreement brokered by the US and other western countries ended two decades of civil war between the Arab and Muslim-dominated north and the mainly Christian and animist black southerners.

I am not agreeing with you people on Mr. Alier to mediate the crisis even if he is well known for some books he wrote.

Why should we not bring somebody outside the killing city of Khartoum to mediate it if there is nothing behind. Have you ever seen a woman betraying her husband?

I personally thanks Mr. Kiir for calling calm to Southerners not to start war otherwise, nobody would say this and that.

    Thanks,

    Yirol boy

We know Mr Abel Alier is a capable person to handle isues pertaining to the North-south disputes over the years.

We do not want to hear again like what happened during Addis -Ababa Agreement that the Agreement was signed between southerners themselves and some nothern politicians for that matter did not reconized it by refering to it that the Agreement was not a “Bible or Koran”

There are a lot of people out there like IGAD and others who were involved in the CPA negotiations over the years.
