Malaria kills Philippine peacekeeper in Sudan
October 28, 2007 (MANILA) — The body of a Philippine soldier who died while serving with a UN military observation team in Sudan will arrive here Sunday, the army said.
Lieutenant Colonel Remerio Batalla is believed to have died of malaria, an army spokesman said, adding the United Nations would investigate his death.
UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Cato said Batalla died in the capital of Lakes state, Rumbek, where he served as a UN military observer monitoring the implementation of the Coprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January.
The spokesman said Philippine troops had been serving in the Sudan for about three years.
