Sudan peace parties agree on demilitarization of oilfields in south

November 1, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government and the former rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)reached an agreement on Thursday on a demilitarization of oilfields in southern Sudan.

New_oil_platforms-2.jpgThe agreement came in a meeting of the Ceasefire Political Commission (CPC) between the two sides, the official SUNA news agency reported.

According to the arrangements, the oilfields in southern Sudan will be patrolled by joint units after the government and SPLM withdraw their forces from there.

“In today’s meeting, CPC has taken a series of decisions including the decision on the demilitarization of the oilfields by Jan. 9, 2008,” CPC member al-Dardiri Mohammed Ahmed was quoted assaying.

He said that the SPLM should pull its forces out of those oilfields before the appointed time so that the joint units could be deployed at the defined positions to safeguard the oilfields.

The CPC, formed by the Sudanese government and the SPLM following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on Jan. 9, 2005, is mandated to monitor the implementation of the permanent ceasefire and security arrangements worked out by the two sides in the CPA.

The commission also decided that the government and the SPLM redeploy their forces respectively to the north and south of the1956 line by the third anniversary of the CPA signing, Ahmed said.

Under another decision taken in the CPC meeting, the cities in the south should be cleared out of all forms of military existence except bodyguards for important persons, Ahmed noted, adding that a UN team would go to southern Sudan to check the redeployment.

During the CPC meeting, the two sides reiterated their commitments to the arrangements relative to the ceasefire as well as what was stipulated in the peace agreement, according to Ahmed.

The latest decisions of the CPC can be helpful to remove a current political crisis in the Sudanese government, which was caused by a decision announced by the SPLM on Oct. 11 to suspend the participation of its ministers in the central government.

This is the most serious crisis for the Sudanese Government of National Unity since it was established in September 2005, in which the political power is shared mainly between the National Congress Party led by President Omer al-Bashir and the SPLM.

It is good to agree on that but we need implementation, many agreements were made but only few implemneted or distortred in the name of implementation with intend to buy time for our selfish predatory brothers. You know them.

Secondly am not move with statement that all major cities in S. Sudan have to be free of military occupation except body guards of important people, Why only S. Sudan? Is it a new agreement besides what was in CPA or what?

Well, the CPC has the right to talk of redeployment of north-south troops in the contentious regions by now but should it not talk of demilitarizing cities in the south. This is not in the pullout agenda otherwise south is not ruled by the commission but by the government of south sudan and which has the Legislative Assembly with all its MPs whose work is to make policies and laws only to be approved by the south sudan president. Now where are you to appear making such policies in the south,do what is yours and leave the rest for the owners otherwise ceasefire is in south sudan cities. On the other hand ceasefire commission is deeply encouraged to committ itself solve the north-south troops redeployments as soon as possible which is viewed as a total insecurity.

Well it is always good to demonstrate sense of maturity when coming to negotiating contentious issue like this. But I still wander why somebody could not clean his house first before telling the neigbourhood to do the same as oppose to jumpping to him with decision or force things to him so that it can allow you peace and space to invade or do evil act. Khartoum as a capital is never free of military. They arm themselves up to their teeth. Even the police who are not surpose to use guns and antitank for despatching rioting and demonstrators are armed up to their fullest breaht and what is the decide of these CPC? Heee we should not take things for grantage that is why these Arabs monopulate us.

Let us get up and think rationally so that we can manage the egotrics attitude of norhterners who always take southerners as half reasonable human beings.

I am sorry, these ceasefire political commission (CPC) did not play justice in their decision. To me it looks like this commission is full on NCP and they can monopulate the discussion.

Those from the SPLM should have not accept to this idea and let it come what may we are ready.

I do not understand the meaning of redeployment offorces in this agreement. Are the cities in the North demilitarized? This is nonsense.
