South Sudan Archbishop condemns Yambio killing, urges unity

By Isaac Vuni

November 10, 2007 (JUBA) — The Catholic Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro said the incident that happened in Yambio last Sunday November 4th were three senior police officers were murdered in cold blood by their fellow Southern Sudanese’s SPLA from Joint Integrated Unit (JIU) based in Yambio was an evil act deliberately calculated to divide the people of Southern Sudan and that it must be condemned in strongest term by all peace loving Sudanese.

The primate said the gallant police officers lost their life in the process of implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that was signed between the government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement on January 9th 2005.

On behalf of the entire ecumenical Christians faithful in Juba, Archbishop Lukudu registered Church condolences to the families, children, relatives and friends of all those who were murdered in cold blood while performing their national duty at Yambio police station of Western Equatoria State.

He appeals to all faithful operating in southern Sudan to take more time in praying for consolidation of peace in Sudan particularly in the ten states of southern Sudan by continually renewing their faith in God through constant prayers.

He suggested that a special day be devoted for prayer for building and consolidating the comprehensive peace agreement that has been achieved through ultimate scarified of many lives of southern Sudanese; adding that all schools will be requested to close for that particular day.

The ecumenical prayer for this year has been organized by Sudan Council of Churches (SCC) under the theme, “Do not let your necks be tied on Slavery again.”

According to SCC transformation committee, there are five officially registered Christian’s churches operating in Southern Sudan and they are The Catholic Church, The Episcopal Church of the Sudan, The African Inland Church, The Presbyterian Church of Sudan and the Pentecostal Church of Sudan. While there are other Churches operating under the cover of either as a branches of ECS or AIC, but better known as breakaway Churches and they are; The Christian Brethren Church of Southern Sudan, The Christian Brotherhood Church of Southern Sudan, The New Apostolic Church of Southern Sudan, The Full Gospel Church of Southern Sudan among others.

Meanwhile the Jehova Witness Church of Southern Sudan and The Sevenday Adventists Church of Southern Sudan are completely in disagreement with others churches above and each one of the two churches stand by itself; hence they could not participate than in ecumenical prayer because they are more interesting in opposing others churches than forging Christians unity for the glory of God in the war torn southern Sudan, remarks pastor Charles.

Earlier the facilitator of the ecumenical prayer, Mr. Tiberious Lecca, stated that the purpose of the ecumenical prayer is to seek godly intervention and to forge unity among Southern Sudanese irrespective of their religion or political affiliation to embrace none violence approach method as an ideal way of addressing burning issues now devouring southern Sudan after the CPA was signed. Today we are witnessing so many things going wrong in the government of national unity and of Southern Sudan including Sudanese churches.

Due to heavy downpour in Juba the capital of Southern Sudan that started from 9 am to 12 noon compounded with poor attendance from various denominations, the organizers of the ecumenical prayer day were compelled to postpone the prayer day for a later day.

In attendance were Bishop Nicolau Oling of Christian Brethren Church and Bishop Andrew Wawa of AIC among other Brethren from different denominations in Juba. The Governor of Central Equatoria state, Clement Wani Konga ,a catholic, and the Vice President of the government of Southern Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, an Anglican, were expected to deliver speeches after the closing prayer but non of them appear nor send a word through a representative.

I want to comment on Pastor Charles’ comment. Dear Pastor, your comment about these two Churches above suggest to other people that you have very little understanding about them, or what they really believe. Both the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Jehovah Witnesses have a reputation as the people who are calling the world to repent of their sins, and return to the Bible.
Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” was Jesus’ first recorded call right after He began his public ministry (Matthew 4:17)
And this is what Adventist and Witnesses are mainly known for. Visit their websites and read about their mission in the world first before judging them.

The Bible say that “There is no peace, said the LORD for the wicked” (Isaiah 48:22 ) “and Salvation is far from the wicked (Psalm 119:155)
The question is why not? Because what Sudanese need is not someone to sing the song of “peace peace” but the song of “repent, repent” for the Lord had visited his people with His salvation.
Before singing peace, we’ve got to sing repentance first. And when we repent, God’s forgiveness will flood Sudan with peace in all villages, but not before we rid ourselves of our black magic (kujur) and conjecturing, and secret shrines, and talking to the spirits of the dead, etc.

The ecumenical work will carry God’s blessings if they first bring nation the Gospel of repentance, but if they are in to just please people by overlooking the need for repentance (As SDAs and Witnesses are doing), God Himself will not be among them, and it won’t matter how many of them there are. “For God knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”
Let’s call our nation back to the Bible and try to know what is inside it, because the priests stumble since many of them know not the Scriptures themselves- what then can they teach people about God but vanities?

This is what I think brother Charles, that you should know Adventists and Witnesses and support them in bringing the nation to repentance, only then will they know that peace is directly related to “obeying God first” instead of trying to spurn a bad image on them. Besides if God is with them, you will find yourself resisting God.
