SPLM blames government for procrastinating over peace

NAIROBI, Feb 04, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement has expressed its concern over the Sudanese government’s procrastination in achieving a comprehensive peace.

The SPLM official spokesman, Yasir Arman, revealed details on the last round of talks between the government and the SPLM to the London based newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat.

He said: “The government delegation asked to suspend the talks until next March with the excuse of performing the haj.”

Arman added: “In view of the fact that the pilgrimage will end in the first week of February it was decided to resume talks on 17 February.”

He indicated that the SPLM was worried about the government trying to gain time in the peace process through IGAD without taking any decisive step to reach a final agreement.

He further said: “Khartoum’s procrastination is due to the wrong thinking that the US administration is preoccupied with the presidential elections and will not concentrate on Sudan’s issue.
