SPLM criticizes contradictory statements by Sudan’s president
November 22, 2007 (KHARTOUM) – Former rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) say President Omar Al-Bashir’s recent statements are contradictory and could undermine the adjourned dialogue between the two parties.
This comes after President Bashir Wednesday called on the SPLM to work to unify the country. He also promised there would be no resumption of war between the north and the south. Some political observers believe Bashir’s statements are an attempt to calm tensions after his call to increase mujahedeen recruits, which the SPLM described as deplorable.
A confrontation is reported to be brewing between Khartoum and south Sudan’s main party, SPLM, which observers say could potentiality undermine the country’s coalition government and implementation of the 2005 peace deal, which effectively ended the war between the north and the south.
Southern ministers walked out of Sudan’s Government of National Unity last month, claiming that Khartoum was stalling on the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
Meanwhile, the SPLM said although it is not advocating war, it is prepared to defend itself against any aggression. Malik Agar is the vice chairman of the SPLM. From the capital, Khartoum he tells reporter Peter Clottey that they don’t know whether to believe President Bashir or not.
“We don’t know whether he has changed the trend from trend of war to a trend of peace because three days ago he was calling on the mujahedeens or the holy warriors to mobilize in the camps and to resume the training and the preparation for war. But now he is saying that there is no return to war. That may be a good portion for everything else, but for us in the SPLM we have different mission altogether. We are not advocating war…but we reserve the aright to defend ourselves, should war breakout” Agar pointed out.
He said the SPLM wants the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which effectively ended the war between the north and the south to be implemented.
“We are partners for the implementation of the CPA that we have already agreed between our two parties. So we would continue to be partners as long as the CPA is still there and as long as the implementation of the CPA is still there. As for unity, the priority of the SPLM is unity, and that this is a national party that has been calling for unity on new basis,” he said.
Agar reiterated the SPLM’s frustration with what he described as President Bashir’s inconsistencies.
“I see contradictions that the mobilization for jihad and the holy war on one hand and then the call for peace on the other hand, and the youths are going to the camps. For us we reserve the right to defend ourselves… it literally means we reserve the right to defend ourselves if we are attacked. We are not going to say ladies and gentlemen,” Agar noted.

Bashir’s better stayed with his most recent statement “no return to war”. The Sudanese people are tired of Bashir,s indecisive leadership and particularly the marginalize areas of Sudan-Nuba mountains, South Sudan, Eastern Sudan, Southern Blue Nile, and the Darfur. These regions have suffered a great deal since independence in 1956, so they would like to see a New Sudan-secular and democartic Sudan. Certainly, this president has no regard for the welfare of the Sudanese people-this is evident in his talked of war just after two years of peace. He should be talking about improving our society by improving social living. After any war things change automatically-if he didn’t want change, he should have stayed in the front-line. If Bashir continue with the status quo, he will experience social revolution in Sudan-the power of the people. Also Sudanese should be a ware that there are people who would like to see Sudan in spectacular failure or anarchy-like Somalia for example, so war should be a watchword for our representative.

It is good to be always suspicious for things that are around us,it can save us a lot of trouble.I think the latest reaction of the SPLM is one of enlightment since it appear,they have not only become suspicious,but now have mastered the tricts always use by the north to fool southerners and the other marginalized sudanese which have on many occassions played into thier advantage,they seem to lie and we the rest believe them to be right. But I really doubt whether their magical lie is going to work now given their many recorded disrespect for accords made in the interest of the nation’s stability and prosperity for all,which have made all the regimes in the north suspects in the eye of the marginalized ones,in term of the question for equel treatment and opportunities in the country administration.The NCP or NIF ought to know that there is nothing they can do about it now,the people of the south and their administration are much awaken to be deceived espacially in the wake of the call of Majideen to be prepare for war with the south,although rhetorically they keep saying they are not going to war with the south again,well that is fine,but what is the call for the majideen for? and against whom they are mobolize?You should be more realistic then throwing words aimelessly that way mr.Arab presidnt,you see,you return to your vomits,so bad indeed mr.majideen man.When will you Omer in particular and your other northern elites come to your senses and play a constructive role in the country rather then making jokes about war.For your information we in the south are very much prepared and ready to lay down our lives to preserve our diginity.For now I advise the northerners,Omer Bashir included to guide against their mouth, they are such a nuisance.
