Sudanese president holds talks with Sultan Qabus of Oman
KHARTOUM, Feb 08, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — Sudanese president Omar al-Beshir has paid a one-day visit to the Sultanate of Oman following an invitation from Sultan Qabus Bin-Sa’id, the sultan of Oman. He was accompanied by a high-level ministerial delegation.
At the residence of Sultan in Hisn Al Shomoukh in the region of Manah yesterday, the two leaders held a session of talks.
President al-Beshir briefed his Omani counterpart on the peace talks between his government and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement that have been taking place in Kenya under the sponsorship of IGAD and the progress that has so far been achieved.
Al Beshir commended the efforts of Sultan Qabus to support development and rehabilitation projects in Sudan. He also commended the developing ties between the two countries.
He expressed his appreciation for the activities of the Sudanese community in the sultanate and their role in promoting people-to- people relations.
For his part, Sultan Qabus commended the efforts and commitments of the Sudanese government to achieve peace and reiterated the commitment of the sultanate to continue supporting development projects in Sudan.
The foreign minister, Dr Mustafa Osman Ismail, said president al-Bashir briefed Sultan Qabus on the progress made in the peace process and the requirements of the post-peace accord phase.
He added that the talks also touched on bilateral relations and ways of promoting them further, as well as the situation in the Arab region.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Sudan and the Sultanate of Oman have held a joint meeting during which they discussed political issues and how to coordinated among themselves regarding these issues, besides future Arab subjects such as reform in the Arab League. It was decided that a joint ministerial commission be set up between the two countries.
