GoS to cooperate with other parties to restore situation in west

KHARTOUM, Feb 09, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The ruling party has expressed readiness to cooperate with all other political and social activists in solving the political and humanitarian situation in Darfur.

In the same time, the secretary-general of the ruling National Congress (NC), Ibrahim Ahmad Omar said government has no intention to hold direct talks with western rebels in Geneva.

Oamr has called on all national NGO’s to intensify their efforts in the coming period so as to solve humanitarian situation in Darfur.

In a press statement issued last Saturday, he said committees had been sent by the ruling party to Darfur where they were providing humanitarian and social services in an attempt to solve the situation there. He said stability in Darfur would be very important in the coming period.

In the same context, Omar will meet today some people from Darfur in the framework of efforts being exerted by the ruling party towards settling the situation in Darfur.

Omar also indicated the ruling party and the opposition Ummah Party had agreed to pursue dialogue between them, noting that the ruling party had appointed a committee to make contacts with the Ummah Party to discuss the destiny of Sudan especially on issues related to the constitution, Islamic Shariah and national unity. He said the committees will deal with these issues aimed at arriving at an agreement between the two parties regarding these issues.

In a related development, Omar said appropriate organs have been put in place to implement the Jeddah Agreement recently signed between the National Congress and the opposition National Democratic Alliance. He also noted party’s intensive activities to restore co-existence and brotherhood among the citizens as a preliminary step ahead of coming peace.
