Arab League donates one million Dollars to Darfur AU force
December 6, 2007 (KHARTOUM) – The League of Arab States has provided one million US Dollars as a financial donation to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS).
AMIS said in a press statement that this donation is dedicated to settle payment arrears to the AU Cease-Fire Commission (CFC) Sudanese Parties Representatives.
This donation has been offered in response to a request by the AU-UN Joint Representative for Darfur (JSR) and AMIS Head of Mission, Rodolphe Adada to the Arab League Secretary-General, Amr Mussa during their meeting on 27 October in Sirte, Libya on the occasion of the launching of Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks on Darfur.
Adada has on this occasion expressed profound appreciation and gratitude on behalf of AMIS for this support made at a critical phase when the mission is on the threshold of transferring authority to the United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
He stressed the fact that UNAMID will continue to enhance the prevailing cooperation with the Arab League in the future and commended its efforts to the promotion of a comprehensive peace in Darfur.
process without an effective peacekeeping force in place.”
UNAMID is due to take over from the existing but under-resourced AU mission (known as AMIS) by the start of next month, but it lacks offers for crucial force units and the Sudanese Government has raised a series of objections and obstacles.
