Sudanese committees say one protester was killed, but gov’t denies
December 19, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – At least, one protester was killed and dozens were injured according to the Resistance Committees, but the government said there were no human casualties during the massive anti-coup protests on Sunday.
The Resistance Committee of Graif East neighbourhood said that the security forces shot dead one of its members while they were trying to cross the Manshiya Bridge leading to Khartoum.
However, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) did not confirm the death but issued a statement saying they were monitoring the grave human rights and pledged to release a detailed statement later.
For its part, the Ministry of Health stated that 123 people were injured on Sunday. 121 protesters were wounded in Khartoum State while two people sustained wounds in Kassala State.
“No deaths had been recorded in all states of Sudan until the release of this report at 07:30 pm today, Sunday, December 19, 2021”, reads the statement.
The Ministry said there were suffocation cases that required hospitalization due to the use of tear gas. Further, it reported the injuries but stopped short of mentioning their cause.
The security forces fired a lot of tear gas and used bullets to disperse the protesters in the vicinity of the presidential palace on Saturday to prevent a sit-in the resistance committees announced in the evening.
The antiriot police attempted to stop the mass of demonstrators who successfully removed the barricades and crossed the bridges from Omdurman and Khartoum North.
Also, the security forces sought in vain to prevent the processions in Khartoum from reaching the headquarters of the military-dominated Sovereign Council.
