Sovereign Council calls to involve African Union in Sudan’s UN-facilitated process

January 10, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s military-led Transitional Sovereign Council welcomed the UN initiative for comprehensive dialogue and called to involve the African Union in the process.

The Sovereign Council on Monday held a regular meeting to discuss among other the UN initiative for an intra-Sudanese dialogue announced on Saturday, January 8.

“The Council called to involve the African Union to support the initiative and contribute to the success of the Sudanese dialogue, which should remain a Sudanese-led process,” said a statement, issued after the meeting.

The African Union suspended Sudan’s membership immediately after the military takeover which breached the AU brokered transitional declaration signed on August 17, 2019.

In November 2021, the coup leaders declined to receive an African Union envoy who was supposed to hold talks with the civilian and military parties to end the rift.

But the military considered the visit as ineffective, after freezing Sudan’s membership on October 26 two days after the coup.

After the Burhan-Hamdok framework agreement on November 21, 2021, the African Union Peace and Security Council welcomed the deal and decided to “promptly dispatch” a mission to Sudan to facilitate the transition process.

But, the visit did not take place awaiting Khartoum’s green mine.

The announcement of the UN-facilitated process in Khartoum took place after huge international pressures led by the U.S., as the military component sought to exclude the revolutionary forces from the transition accusing them of empowerment.
