SPLA force, Arab tribe clash in north-south Sudan border

December 24, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — More that seventy persons were killed during two-day clashes between Misseriya pastoral tribe and units from Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) following the arrest of a cattle herder by the SPLA.

Fierce fighting broke out over the weekend — Saturday and Sunday December 22 and 23 — between the SPLA and members of the nomadic Misseriya tribe in southern Kordofan.

There was no independent confirmation of the numbers killed while both sides gave conflicting figures.

James Hoth, a major-general in the SPLA said that more than 20 SPLA soldiers were killed and more than 50 Misseriya killed.

But Misseriya sources said they lost 9 people during the two-day clashes and that 30 SPLA soldiers were killed.

The incident reflects the growing tension in the region between the SPLA and the cattle herders who roam the area from the Northern Kordofan to South Kordofan.

During the years of the civil war from 1983 to 2005, the Sudanese government recruited local militia from the Arab tribes in the region to fight the SPLA particularly after rebels attacked pastoral tribes to acquire food.

The SPLA Spokesperson attributed the attack to local tensions and insinuated that the cattle herders were manipulated.

“Somebody told them that we have gone beyond the border; that we are in the north,” Hoth said.
“They told the Murahaleen that we will not allow people to go to the south.” He told Reuters today from Juba.

The independent Al-Sahafa daily reported that the fighting occurred when SPLA soldiers on Saturday arrested a cattle herder from the Dinka tribe but working with the Misseriya. The SPLA soldiers blamed the herder for having a weapon, which is banned in the region.

It was reported that the first day ended with the killing of 4 Arab tribesmen.

On Sunday, the Misseriya from Miram locality, about 90 km south west of Al-Mujlad region in southern Kordofan attacked an SPLA camp in Grenti in northern Bahr Al-Ghazal to avenge the killings of their people.

However, the SPLA accused the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) of supporting the attack against the SPLA positions, Reuters reported.

“Combined forces of the Murahaleen and the Popular Defence Forces (PDF) supported by elements of SAF (Sudan Armed Forces) attacked,” said James Hoth.

But the northern Sudanese Armed Forces denied they or the PDF took part in any attack.

The SPLA signed a peace deal with Khartoum in 2005, ending decades of north-south war that claimed 2 million lives. Nonetheless this incident highlights the need for reconciliation and pacific coexistence in the north-south Sudan border areas, a matter that the two peace partners have not yet implemented.

    Dearest Citizens.
Allowed me to pay my condolence to the families of the victims on recent attack by the Arab Militia on SPLA position the South border that claims the lives of more then seventy during the fighting,
this is the outcome of the rececent mobilisation called by the president of the republic Field Marshal Omer Hassen Albshir in Madeni to openned the new camps for Mujaideen and forces of DUP to be ready for any thing and he gone far as to mentioned their victorious on Nuba,Blue Nile and Torit during the War.
Why he claim to be the president of the Sudan and he allowed such killing of innocent lives to happen ? this is the time of peace for every citizen to enjoyed but President should not subjected the country to war for many decade.
How long will this unnecessay attack by Sudan Army forces to the SPLA and civilians in the south shall come to an end.
The Goverment of Southern Sudan should not kept silent although we are for peace for the whole of the Sudan but the wrong element in the Khartoum Goverment should be taught a lesson for them not to forget the SPLA.
It is very clear now that Khartoum goverment led by the NCP are not for peace but ready for war and the will not succeeded instead it is going to be their last governance in the Sudan forever.
Can I also thank the SPLA Officers,NCOs and other ranks for thier resistance attempt made by the supported mailitias sent by Khartoum, this is a clear lesson to them not to claim any victory any more over the SPLA.
you should have to remain vigelent and in maximum alert for anything that may attack your position.
The Goverment of Southern Sudan led by the SPLM should analysed what the NCP their partner in the CPA is doing, are the really committed for peace or war so that we shall not be victim of the situation at the end.
the SPLM is the only party in the history that fought for the right of marginalised groups of the sudan whom their rights denied over the years since our country was first ruled by the outside powers during the colonization period followed by the fake various attempt regime Goverments in Khartoum since independent by minority leaving out the majority inthe governace of the country.
this has consitute the fundamental problem in the Sudan in which the SPLM goverment brought to an end through the CPA that give equall right to the whole citizen regardless of anythings.
if the NCP is not working on the right of sudanese citizens then people have to look for other solutions such as spliting of the Country into several states or removal of wrong element in the Khartoum goverment by any meant so that the country enjoyed the peace and work for the reconstruction of the wars affected areas.
I want to assure our new Sudan citizen to reunited under the SPLM goverment for the security and defence of the country from any attack.
May almighty God rest the souls of our victims in the enternal peace.
    SPLA Oyee,New Sudan Oyee.

    Dear Citizens.
Allowed to pay my condolence to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims on recent attack made by the Arab supported militias on the SPLA position at the south border on 24/12/2007 that claims more then seventy lives.
this is the outcome of the calling of Mujaeediin(holy warriors)and DUP forces to assembled at their new camps to be ready for anything during the open rally in Madeni by the President of the Republic Omer beshir.
The started their plan attack toward the christmas day so that the undermined the christian celebration to our almighty God.
They also did it that way because the believed that all the SPLA forces would be engaged in the celebration of the Christmas not knowing that they celebrated at their camps.
this is too much for President Beshir to subjected the generations to wars and destruction and he claim to be the head of the country.
how long are you going to survied on this dirty game of looting and killing of innocent people of Southern Sudan ?
If you don’t stopped such crimes then you would be taught a lesson that you will not forget upto death.
You left the many parts of the country to the misserable living as the have no land and resources to enjoyed upon.
The SPLM Goverment led by Gen Kiir Mayardit is committed to implement the CPA to the letter so that the whole country enjoyed to the maximum that is why they don’t think back to what the fake goverment in Khartoum are doing to the country citizen for retiliation or otherwise we would have been in pieces.
the SPLM Goverment is the only party in the history that fought for the right of marginalzation for seeking the political settlement to the ongoing fundamental problems of the Sudan since our country was first ruled by the outside powers upto the time of the independent, sudan have never been enjoying the peace and development because of lack of good governance as majority were made victims by the minority in Khartoum.
this is not going to be allowed by the SPLM goverment to continues but the will protect the rights of the citizen and this is the full duty of the SPLA to defence and granted the protection of the CPA that give right of good governace to the whole country and if any one need to temper with it then the SPLA will deal that obsticle.
If the Arabs does not want their existance in the Sudan then let them be misuse by the NCP to commit crimes and killing of innoscent people.
I want to assure our New Sudanese citizen to be reunited under their goverment led by Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit for realisation of the peace, unity, democracy, equality, development, progress and modernization in the whole country.
May almighty God rest the souls of the victims in enternal peace,SPLM Oyee,New Sudan Oyee.

we don’t want back to war as our president is alway preaching it to the sudanese people but if President ommer stop refueling the mailitias to fight the southern and create distability then the country would finf a chance of going back to war.
how long are we going tolerate such abuse of killing innoscent people while there is peace, peace with losing of lives is not a really peace,
    let us defined again.
    thank you.

This incident is one more example of why it is necessary to firmly establish a North/South border. However, President Bashir and the NCP (NIF) will do everything in their power in order to avoid that. Insecurity along the border areas is one more tool Khartoum uses to chip away at the foundation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Please beware Southern Sudanese — this is a MAJOR issue. And PLEASE DO NOT allow Khartoum to use the border issue as a negotiating point — Khartoum agreed to it, now they MUST abide by it. And by the way, it’s an encouragement to me to see that Lt. General James Hoth Mai is involved. Commander James is a man whose intellectual capacity is equal to his battlefield prowess. Actually, there are several extremely capable commanders among the SPLA. Their strategic and intellectual capabilities are surpassed only by their courage and commitment to the freedom and liberty of a democratic New Sudan. Bashir has nothing to match them.

Today we are effective in the infantry warfare, but at this time we should transform everything to air since we do have the resources.I believe soutth sudan can do it. Arabs are forcing us to declare separation ,but we can not do it before 20011 because of our brothers in blue nile and nuba mountains. However,if the arab messiriya could not know how to grass their cattles in the soil of south sudan ,then let them grass them in Dongla,

Southern Sudan borders need to be patrol by helicopters ,this help the border patrol soldiers to spot the enemy from far and get ready. This is my own opinion to the government of Southern Sudan. The war is not over, that why there is killing of SPLM/A soldiers by Bashir militia. The government of Southern Sudan need to select high school graduate southerner who are in Kenya with grade of B or better. After the academy selection there will be another physical selection, of which these student will go through vision check, and all health checkup. The final one will be endurance of hardshipness test, which is going to be 2 miles run of which each student must ran 12minutes and 30second or better.
My opinion is my opinion, but if we all think for something to better Southern Sudan it will be most better country on the planet.
