UN launches $1.9 billion humanitarian plan in Sudan for 2022

January 11, 2022 (KHARTOUM) -The United Nations announced Tuesday the launch of a $1.9 billion humanitarian plan for 2022 to support vulnerable people in Sudan.

About 14.3 million people – almost one in every three persons – across the country are estimated to need humanitarian assistance in 2022. This is about 0.8 million people more than 2021.

“On Sudan, (the UN) launched the Humanitarian Response Plan for 2022, which aims to reach 10.9 million vulnerable people at a cost of $1.9 billion,” said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarrac.

Nearly half of these funds will go towards lifesaving activities.

In addition, the humanitarian aid will cover areas such as health; the prevention and treatment of diseases; and access to education, livelihoods and water and sanitation.

The East African nation is facing a recession that started in 2018, inter-communal conflicts that triggered large-scale displacement and natural hazards.

The coup d’état of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on October 25, 2021, forced the international community to pause significant economic and financial aid to back the transitional period.

In 2021, the UN and international groups provided humanitarian assistance to more than 8.1 million people.
