Sudan recalls its dismissed pro-democracy ambassadors
January 12, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan has recalled pro-democracy ambassadors who voiced their opposition to the coup asking them to return to Khartoum after al-Burhan’s decision end of their office.
On 27 October, the coup leaders and head of the Sudanese army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan dismissed six ambassador followed by six others as they had issued a joint statement denouncing the military takeover and the dissolution of the civilian-led transitional authority.
After the signing of a political agreement on November 21 with al-Burhan, Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok reinstated the dismissed diplomats in their positions but the head of the Sovereign Council was not convinced by the decision.
On Wednesday, diplomatic sources in Khartoum told the Sudan Tribune that the foreign ministry instructed the dismissed diplomats to return the country pointing to al-Burhan’s decision of October 27, 2021.
The decision includes Sudan’s ambassadors to Belgium and the European Union ,Canada, China, France, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Switzerland and the United Nations in Geneva, Turkey, the United Nations – New York, and the United States.
The sources pointed out that the military authorities are discontented by the continued international recognition of the sacked ambassadors, especially since it directed the Foreign Ministry to inform the host countries of its decision to terminate their jobs.
Sudan’s Ambassador to Washington, Noureddine Sati, told Al-Jazeera TV last Saturday that the U.S. administration had not acknowledged the decision to dismiss him and that he was still in his position as ambassador.
Sati further said he is communicating with the relevant authorities in the U.S. administration and the Sudanese government, alike.
It worth mentioning that Hamdok before his resignation on January 2, issued a number of decisions aiming to cancel the appointment of state governors and senior official by al-Burhan few days after the coup.
Several ambassadors confirmed their recall to Khartoum. But it is not clear if they would return to the country.
