January 13, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The National Charter groups that support the October 25 coup called for the formation of a caretaker government until the conclusion of the UN-facilitated dialogue.

The Force for Freedom and Change (the National Charter) held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the political situation in Sudan and the intra-Sudanese dialogue proposed by the Head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission Sudan (UNITAMS).

In a statement released following the meeting, the coalition which includes some signatory groups expressed their support for the initiative saying the national issues can only be resolved through comprehensive dialogue.

They further stressed the need to fill the executive void in the country.

“The leadership body will proceed to consult with the rest of the components to appoint an interim caretaker government until an agreement is reached at the end of the dialogue,” further stressed the statement.

The forces of the National Charter allied with the military component had previously called for the dissolution of the transitional government and organized demonstrations and sit-ins out the Republican Palace to press al-Burhan to take this decision.

The FFC mainstream and the National Charter groups failed to agree on a joint political declaration, after a series of meetings in this respect.

In line with the constitutional declaration governing the troubled transition in Sudan, the military component has no right to appoint a government.

Former Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok resisted pressures to form a caretaker cabinet preferring to work with the undersecretaries in the different ministries until an agreement is reached with the FFC coalition.
