Friend of Sudan discuss ways to stabilise the troubled country
January 18, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The Friend of Sudan group held a meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss joint efforts to support stability in Sudan, said a statement released in Riyadh, on Tuesday.
The meeting took place as the United Nations has initiated an intra-Sudanese process aiming to bring all the stakeholders to agree on a road map and a timeline to achieve the remaining goals of the transition in Sudan.
“The meeting discussed ways to develop joint coordination to support all efforts that ensure a peaceful political transition in the sisterly Republic of Sudan,” reads the statement.
Further, the participants discussed ways “to supporting the efforts of the United Nations Integrated Mission to Support the Transitional in Sudan (UNITAMS),” added the statement.
In addition to Saudi Arabia, the was attended by the United Arab Emirates, the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden and Norway, according to the statement.
UNITAMS and the European Union also attended the meeting.
On Monday, the Quad countries held a separate meeting to ensure regional coordination, due to the close relations the coup leader in Sudan have with the UAE and Saudi Arabia as Sudan is part of the Saudi led military alliance in Yemen.
On Monday, the head of the U.S. delegation Phee Molly Under Secretary for Africa also held a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
Some 71 people were killed and thousands wounded during the anti-coup unrest that has sparked in the country, in response to the military takeover supported by some Darfur groups on October 25, 2021, pausing the already difficult structural reforms establishing a democratic state in Sudan.
