Sudan accuses Chadian army of violating its territory

December 28, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan accused Chad today of violating its airspace, and territory, denying Chad’s accusations of supporting the neighbouring rebels.

Chadian_troops_ride.jpgKhartoum foreign ministry said on Friday that three military aircrafts violated Sudan’s airspace and bombed Rajel al-Harziah and Karmolah localities, 56 klm southern east el-Geniana, the capital of West Darfur. Sudan also, said Chadian troops incursed into Sudanese territory, on Friday December 28 in the morning.

The statement disclosed that Karmolah had been air attacked in mid December without elaborating.

Yesterday, Chadian government spokesperson Hourmadji Moussa Doumgor accused Sudan of arming Chadian rebels to block the deployment of European troops that expected to be deployed in Chad and Central African Republic.

The foreign ministry said that Chadian allegations are just an attempt to cover the host of a meeting held by the rebel Justice and Equality Movement in the mountainous area of Bhai, inside Chadian territory. It further said that the rebel movement obtained N’djamena support that conducted to deteriorate the security situation in western Sudan.

Chad and Sudan trade accusations of each supporting the other’s rebels – and each side denies the charges.

Doumgor said yesterday that Sudan had regrouped and rearmed fighters from the two main rebel factions in preparation for more attacks.

“They are now at the military and civilian airports in el-Geneina, from where they are preparing alongside Sudanese soldiers to launch imminent attacks against Chad,” The Chadian official said.

Sudanese statement renewed its commitment to the signed agreements with Chad particularly Tripoli agreement signed in February 2006 and where the two parties pledge to refrain from supporting rebel groups.

However, Khartoum said for the first time that its army reserves the right of response to this aggression and knows well how to choose the appropriate time and place for the response.

In the past Khartoum used to use terms as “Sudan remains calm and is exercising self-restraint and working to resolve the problem peacefully.”

This is the third time that Deby troops enter Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region and fight Chadian rebels. The first airspace violations took place November. 5 and 7, 2005, while the second occurred on December 15, 2006.
