EU urges Ethiopia, Eritrea to resolve differences peacefully
January 1, 2008 (ADDIS ABABA) — The European Union (EU) has urged Ethiopia and Eritrea to refrain from any threat or use of force and to resolve their differences by peaceful means, the official Ethiopian News Agency reported Tuesday.
The EU confirmed the responsibility of the countries to resolve their differences and express its readiness to assist them in the implementation of their respective obligations under international law, the report said, quoting an EU statement.
The EU was aware of its responsibilities under the Algiers Agreement and willing to facilitate the solution of the existing difficulties in the relations between the two countries, said the statement.
It reiterated its unwavering commitment to support efforts to promote sustainable peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The continuing tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the failure to resolve their longstanding boundary dispute and the military build-up along their common border were cited as causes for serious concern by the international community.
