Hemetti discusses peace implementation with South Sudan’s Kiir, Marchr

February 15, 2022 (JUBA) – Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemetti” Sudan’s Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council arrived Tuesday in Juba for talks with the South Sudanese officials on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and bilateral relations.

Hemetti met with President Salva Kiir and his First Deputy Riek Machar to assess the implementation process of the revitalized peace pact.

After the meeting, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Minister of Presidential affairs told reporters that the South Sudanese president and the visiting Sudanese official discussed issues pertaining to the peace implementation.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has invited Mohamed Hamdan Daglo to attend the Presidency meeting that will be held Wednesday, in the Office of the President to discuss issues pertaining to peace and security in both South Sudan and Sudan,” he further said.

Three years after the signing of the peace agreement, South Sudan started the implementation of the security arrangements in terms of training and formation of the unified national army. However, the parties are at odds over the command structures.

Also, the South Sudanese peace partners have to finalize the other matters related to the electoral preparations, the constitutional-making process.

In a statement released in Khartoum, the Sovereign Council said that Hemetti and Machar discussed the implementation of the security arrangements.

Sudanese Defence Minister Yassin Ibrahim took part in the meeting.

South Sudanese Presidential Adviser Tut Gatluak who received the Hemetti at the Juba Airport said the latter would listen to views exploring ways through which graduation, deployment and unification of the forces will be expedited.

“The visit will also be an opportunity to brief the South Sudanese president on the progress made in the implementation of the Sudanese Juba mediated peace agreement,” added Gatluak.

The South Sudanese officials did not mention if Hemetti discussed the resumption of the peace talks between the military-led Sudanese government and the SPLM-N of Abdel Aziz al-Hilu.
