Ethiopia, Sudan agree to strengthen energetic cooperation

January 10, 2008 (ADDIS ABABA) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister discussed with the Sudanese minister of Energy and Mining ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of electric power and oil.
Meles Zinawi received on Thursday Awad al-Jaz in the presence of the Ethiopian Minister of Mines and Energy, Alemayehu Tegenu. The two parties agreed to enhance energetic cooperation and accelerate the implementation of a joint project to provide Sudan with 100 MW electric power.
With regard to oil cooperation, the two countries talked the renewal of an existent accord to export Sudanese fuel to Ethiopia.
According to the agreement previously signed between the two neighboring countries, Ethiopia has been importing some10, 000 metric tons of fuel from Sudan each month. Both countries are expected to sign a new agreement as the 5 year old former agreement expires.
Prime Minister Meles said the project launched to link Ethiopia and Sudan through electric power line is well underway.
“The cooperation of the two countries in various sectors is expanding,” Meles said adding “the project launched to link Ethiopia and the Sudan through electric line has reached to a commendable stage”.
Ethiopian minister of energy, Alemayehu Tegenu said in press statements that over 41 million USD loan is obtained from the World Bank to accomplish the Ethio-Sudan joint project.
He further added that Ethiopia is planning to export electric power supply to Sudan and Djibouti by 2010 and to Kenya by 2011 when the total 3 hydro electric power projects under construction, namely, Anabeles Gilgel Gibe and Tekeze which will have a potential of generating 460MW , 420MW and 300 MW respectively go functional by 2009.
Ethio-sudan electric power project will have the capacity of exporting 100 MW electric power to neighboring Sudan. The project is expected to be finalized in 15 to 18 months period. The transmission line will run between the Ethiopian towns of Bahir-Dar and Metema and up to the border with Sudan to connect the countries’ grids.

The Minister of Mining and Energy Mr John Luk Jok in the Goverment of Southern Sudan was suppose to attend that agreement with the Ethiopian Goverment not so-called Awad-al-jaz the Central Minister.
They don’t deserved any right over our oil revenue any more,enough is enough.
The lectric power should be extended to Southern Sudan only through Pachalla or Boma.
The Bashirr Goverment should not seek for relationship with neighbours with our oil rather than seeking relationship with salt, and we have right to stopped.
We are waiting them to start their journey back to Saudi.
