French Dietswell to drill Sudanese oil

January 11, 2008 (PARIS) — French drilling services provider, Dietswell Engineering, expects to generate a monthly revenue of one million USD (684,000 Euro) from a drilling project in Sudan, the company announced on January 8, 2008.

The drilling contract was signed with White Nile (5B) Petroleum Operating Company Ltd (WNPOC), a joint operating company owned by Malaysian oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Sudan’s state-owned oil firm Sudapet, (50:50).

The WNPOC acts also as operator on behalf of the various partners. In block 5A: they work with the Indian ONGC Videsh, in block 5B their partners are the Swedish Lundin and ONGC Videsh, in block 8: they work with the Sudanese Hi Tech Petroleum.

At the end of November 2007, the French company delivered its light-weight land drilling rig RCR1200, entirely designed and developed by Dietswell. The initial investment in the equipment amounted to 11 million Euro ($16.1 mln).

The oil firm has already exercised a first option contract giving visibility until October 2008.

Exploration of oil activities and signing of new contracts with new oil companies to drill the oil in the soil of South Sudan at the moment is not necessary while the implementation of the CPA is not going on well as expected. Drilling of the new oil wells should be ristricted and regulated until we reach the end of the 6 years referundum period.

The mass killing and bombardment of civilian population is still ongoing in Darfur, this is because the government in Khartoum is arming its own militias the janjaweed using the oil money. New militias are emerging in Northern Bahr el Ghazal armed by the same government in Khartoum purported to be the Mesiriyah Arabs tribesmen, well armed and are now causing havoc attacking the SPLA positions provoking to derail the CPA.

Many countries are working hard to sign contracts to drill the oil in Sudan, but non is thinking to sign the contract of constructing good roads and or constract hydro electric power in South Sudan. We in South Sudan are still swimming in the pool of dust in our cities, our roads are full of potholes, broken and temporary built bridges, no standard health facilities, no good schools and we are still using generators for electricity that can go off within few hours.

I for one would not agree for the new oil fields to be drill, we have not saticisfy with the oil revenue of which the south was to get the 50. of the revenue, why should we allow the NCP to continue signing contracts with other oil companies while there is no proper accountability in the current oil revenue. I urge all the people of South Sudan to stand firm and reject any new drilling in the South before the refrandum in 2011, where we will have full control of our oil deal. the SPLM should look in to this issue and stop those companies not to continue with the operation now.

    By Chol Dhoor.

What is all the rush in the mining of Sudanese oil that forced us to open our
resources to monopolist? I mean, what assurances are in place to make the contract attractive and favourable? Two things should be clear before signing of contracts;the benefits of the contract should be development oriented in areas related to road contruction, schools, environmental protection and health
    sector.

Multinvestment in oil sector is totally a wilful defletion of oil and environmental destruction by the oil companies who see benefits to their reflection rather than mutual benefits with the environs.
The investing companies should be monodirectional in economic interest rather than meandering with Sudan politics that shake the forces of peace in Sudan.

    My Turn,

    My opinion.
