JEM: GoS Releases Seven Abducted JEM Members

The Government of Sudan has finally succumbed to intense pressure and released JEM Representatives to the Cease Fire Commission (CFC), UNAMID, at Alfashir, yesterday January 17th. All released detainees, with the exception of one, were abducted from the AU HQ and were kept in detention since December 28th. The disdain with which GoS treats the AU/UN is further exposed by giving the released detainees 24 hours to abandon their posts at the CFC and relocate to areas held by JEM. The implications of this unfortunate development must be noted by all stakeholders:

GoS has proved yet again its intent to disregard all previous Darfur agreements, top among them is N’djamena Ceasefire Agreement, April 04.
GoS is certainly planning for military escalation and the disruption of the CFC work is part of this insidious scheme.
The incident is a massive blow to trust building process between GoS and the Movements in the eve of the coming negotiations and is a clear sign that GoS has already abandoned peaceful resolution of the conflict.
