January 19, 2008 (BOR, Jonglei) — Chairman of admission council, Mr. David Malual Wuor said the location of Dr. John Garang Institute of Science and Technology in Bor town, the headquarters of Jonglei is big pride to the state citizens.
“We had suffered a lot for long and this is a turning point to development and a pay to Jonglei struggle for better Southern,” said Mr. Wuor, a professional teacher is holding a Hon. Bachelor Degree in education. He added that the state citizens should exploit this “golden chance.”
The institute is in the memory of SPLM former leader Dr. John Garang De Mabior, who waged a war for twenty one years against Khartoum before a peace deal, known as Compressive Peace Agreement (CPA) was reached three years ago.
Dr. Garang, who was a native of Bor, died in Helicopter accident twenty days after taking the position of the First Vice President of the Republic of the Sudan and the President for the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS).
The first set of students is 104 (one hundred and four). Forty students have already confirmed their registration and the remaining sixty four will be selected on “merit” after applying. Jonglei state still has thirty students to apply and Unity state takes ten. Other Southern Sudanese will apply through their respective governments raising the reminding twenty students.
Asked why Jonglei state has large number of students, the chairman said it is the commitment of Jonglei state government not any ‘affiliation to Dr. Garang as one may think.’
“Jonglei state government is interested and is due to support her students. No other state has such commitment,” said the chairman adding that facilities also limit their capacity.
“We are having four class rooms and there is no need to confine our students creating congestion.”
The First Vice President and President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, laid foundation stone of the institute on 26 February 2007during his visit to Jonglei State.
The Jonglei state and the Moldovan firm ASCOM Sudd Ltd., one of the companies prospecting for oil in Jonglei State, agreed to install the institute’s physical infrastructures – lecture halls, hostels, offices, laboratories and other amenities.
The International University of Moldovia, Chisinou (IUMC) in a separate agreement with ASCOM Sudd Ltd and the State government, is to provide lecturers, books, laboratory equipments and other teaching aids and facilities.
A director from Moldova, Dr. Vasile, said International University of Moldova is going to support forty students from Jonglei state and the other students will be supported by the state government.
“So far, we have accepted to support the forty students intended to be taken to the International University of Moldova,” said Dr. Vasile who was very pleased to talk to reporters at the Institute this morning.
Basic qualifications include high school certificate from Sudan with at least 80% passes, C+ for Kenya, Grade 12 for Ethiopia and one principle pass and two subsidiaries for Uganda based Southern Sudanese.
The institute will start with an Access Course on February 2 and Bachelor’s Degree in September in Public administration, Forestry and Public Gardens, Pharmaceutical Technology and Ecological Security.
Most of the selective exercises are marred with ‘other considerations’ rather than merit but the board of admission said the Institute will be totally based on ‘merit selection.’ In some selection exercise, many people are simply out competed by those who never done the interview. A case is noted in the South African scholarship when the successful students were replaced by ‘unknowns.’
“We are totally free from corruption and a test will be there to prove your admission to this Institute,” Mr. Wuor affirmed.
Fourteen vacancies for girls are there to answer any question concerning gender.
“We have set aside fourteen vacancies for female students and it is their duty to apply, provided they are qualified,” added the chairman.

People the development is part of all Southern where ever you are and who ever you are its our nation and we have struggle together where we lose our belove ones in all our struggle.So the language that should sound clear to Southern ears is that let the struggle be respresentted by whole Southern not that a single thing has struggle for better Southern.Ideas and opinions are always from single and represented by crowd as done by crowd.We have to be happy that our brothers and sisters who are in poor schools should now have chance for better education If there are well qualified Trs in the recent Uni and chance of scholarship,also this development is good for those who are intending to use inappropriate words should have opportunity to improve their literate skills.my thanks to those who are putting effort and ambition for development in Southern and my thanks to those who are using reasonable language that sound for equality as Southern Sudan.

Developing is coming back to Southern Sudan
I am very glad to express my sincere appreciation for the work done by the governmnent of Jonglei State. This is a kind of development needed by the people of southern Sudan.
Since God created heaven and earth, there had never been an institution like Dr John Garang Institute of Technology in Jonglei State. It is a first of it kind and people in Jonglei State need to embrace it with all their hands. The communities in Jonglei state and southern sudanese in general must be given fair access to this small institution.
My message to the people who interact on this web site is to pay less attention to messages or comments send by people who hide their identities. A true patriotic southern sudanese must share his comments without hiding his/her identity. Comments by people like Toposa boy should be treated as a garbage stuff. If people like Toposa boy are serious about what they always say let them stop disguising themselves.
