Sudan's Burhan (L) shakes hands with Chadian Deby on March 31, 2022

March 31, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and Mahamat Deby Chairman of Chad Military Transitional Council renewed their commitment to preserving stability in the border area.

After the end of his visit to Cairo, al-Burhan paid a short visit to Ndjamena on Thursday where he discussed the security situation on the border between the two countries and the need to bolster joint patrols.

The heads of transitional governments in the two neighbouring countries discussed bilateral relations and regional issues of common concern, according to a statement released in Khartoum after al-Burhan’s return to the country.

Al-Burhan and Deby commended the performances of Sudanese-Chadian joint forces and stressed the importance of ensuring security and stability on the common border, further said the Sovereign Council.

In a statement released in Ndjamena, the Chadian presidency said that the two leaders agreed that the “achievements of the Chad-Sudan Joint Force must be consolidated in order to allow joint development projects to take hold”.

The head of the Chadian transitional authority earlier this month visited Abéché near the West Darfur state and ordered the security forces to protect the border and prevent the spread of tribal violence into Chad.

“They affirmed their keenness to establish security and stability in Sudan, in the Lake Chad region and the Sahel countries”.

The statement also underscored the need to achieve political reconciliation in Libya in the interest of the region.

UN panel of experts in its latest final report to the Security Council said that the armed groups from the Darfur region, including the peace signatories and holdout groups alike, continue to move between Libya and Darfur through Chad.
