The long awaited Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) Upper Nile Conference has began on Friday January 25 in Bor town, Southern Sudan. High on the agenda is the ‘Name of the new diocese’ created out of Bor diocese earlier registered as Kongor.

The governor of Jonglei state, Lt. Gen. Kuol Manyang witnessed the opening ceremony in Laudier church, Bor town, today. Delivering his opening speech, the governor called for the effort of church leaders to work for peace and non segregating co-existence among the people.

“When you read the Ten Commandments, you will realize that they are all about peace. And as children of God, we must work for peace,” said Mr. Manyang shortly before declaring the conference open.

The conference brought all the high ranking church leaders of the region (Upper Nile) to Bor town. Rt. Rev. canon Nathaniel Garang Anyieth, the acting ECS bishop of the Sudan and the bishop of Bor diocese is chairing the conference. Bishops Daniel Deng Bul, Hillary Garang Deng and Ezakiel Diing Ajang, the assistance bishop of Bor diocese, are attending the conference.

The conference is expected to last three or four days. Nearly all units of church in Upper Nile region are represented; including what appears to be minor because the first agenda is very sensitive.

Getting an accepted name for the diocese created out of Bor had remained a setback for long in the regional church system. Some church leaders, from Twic area, want their diocese be called Kongor while others prefer being called Twic East and Duk diocese. Kongor is an area within Twic East County while Duk is an independent County, all in Jonglei state.

Those refusing the naming of the diocese being Kongor say it is squeezing ‘a horse through the eye of the needle.’ This may as well pave a way to seek an independent Duk diocese leaving alone the fierce debate within Twic East community, some observers added so. Those preferring Kongor claims it is the continuation of the existing area name.

Prior to the meeting, the bishop of Reng, Rt. Rev. Daniel Deng told a youth conference earlier January in Bor town that politics shouldn’t interfere with faith. “As Christians, we shouldn’t allow politicians to drive us. What is it to politicians talking about Kongor diocese or whatsoever?” He was referring to this conference.

Other agendas are the possible creation of Malek, Duk dioceses and other plans in the regional church.

I know diivisions among southerners has surprisingly defused from politics, churches, villages and even to the families.

Please this is my advice to the bishops or church leaders of Bor, if the case is not resolved, just feel free to name it as DIOCESE OF GOD and then you go ahead from there toward unity and enternal life.
I will also pray for you to unit.

    God bless

I think these leaders has done a great job i would like to remind Goss that he need to make more encouragment to the local leaders interms of maintaining peace and clans behaviours eg Murle and Bor,Church leaders are welcome to play on their side of christianity not in politics.because Goss has nothing to do at all without help from local leaders,we need Leader like government only to give us rules and how things should be done and he has to represent the area.i strong agree to any acting leader who has a desire of maintaining peace whether you are a priest nor not,i also want to remind Goss he should support the local churches interms of their help such as visiting hopeless, widow, orphans, sick and many more, throught their spirit they can make a different in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ, peace to all.

I would like to encourage my brothers and sisters in faith who’re holding a conference in Bor to work for the vailble church that supports and sustains faith and unity among Bor’s children. We can create as many church units as we can but that is not a solution. The solution is to work together to foster faith and development so that our people realize unity and coexistence in peace.Hence, I would like to appeal to those who are going to make a decision in naming the new diocese emerging from Bor Diocese. They must keep mind that whatever decision they take will affect the future of church in Bor.So go ahead and make a good decision acceptable to all.
    God Bless you all.

    Hello all of you,

It was a great thing that politicians realised that force will take them nowhere, but causing them huge distructions. Why should you church leaders wait for the government to push you for peace process?????? It sounds like you do not know your purpose in church. You are the one to start this peace process without anyone telling you, as long as you said you are Gods’people. And by the way, people do not need what is called bible preaching to be good, because one can be good without going to church or read bibles. So better be carefull when convincing people about peace. Thanks. [email protected]

    Ator

We have very united church than yours because all our pastors are at least primary or TEE graduates, but because Jongkoth love leadership, Nathaniel has to go 1998 to Germany and United states and came with two big bags, full of collars and distribute them like sweets to all those young Jonkoth who knows how to collect cash from people’s hands, in fact that is what turn to be a big problem in Bor churches today. Most of them don’t even differentiate church from Bor traditional dances on weekends, that is amazing.
Why don’t you bring good pastor who
don’t love money from Murle to unite you ?

Anyway, tonight, I am going to pray for peace in Bor. I also want you to go and read the book of Mark that rebuke christians to stop loving money, Bor need to read that four times a day if they want to see the kingdom of God because you people love money more than anything else. Ator bring Nyandeng with you and join prayers body.

    God bless.
