E.U. donates a million dollars to Darfur

KHARTOUM, Feb 16, 2004 (dpa) — The European Union has the equivalent of a million dollars-worth of aid to alleviate conditions in Sudan’s war- ravaged Darfur region, the Sudanese government said Monday.

Humanitarian Affairs Minister Mohammed Yousif said the U.S. government had also pledged hel over a six-month period.

Yousif said the government had meanwhile approved the opening of relief corridors for aid agencies and workers to help those in need in the western region.

The first corridor, to the most-devastated areas in north Darfur, extended from el-Fashir to Kuttum, Kuttum to Ambiro and Ambiro to Kornoy and Tine.

The was also a route from el-Fashir to Kuttum. A second corridor included areas of Nyala to Kass, and Nyala to Nirtedi to Zalengy in south Darfur.

The last route extended from south-west Darfur areas of Zalengy to el-Genainah and from el-Genainah to Kulbus.
