UN chief urges Eritrea, Ethiopia to solve border dispute peacefully

By Tesfa-alem Tekle

February 2,2008 (ADDIS ABABA) — UN secretary general Ban ki- moon, who is in Ethiopia to take part on the 10th ordinary AU summit said Ethiopia and Eritrea must show a political will to refrain from any military action over their border dispute.

In a press conference at AU head Quarters in Addis Ababa he said “Ethiopia and Eritrea must narrow and solve their differences and engage themselves in to a dialogue based on former agreements signed.

The peace process between the two neighbors stalled after Ethiopia rejected an April 2002 ruling by the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission. Both countries had initially agreed to accept the ruling as “final and binding”.

He has called on Eritrea to stop hindering UN mission’s activity at the border and respect the Authority and peaceful mission of UNMEE.

UN has been repeatedly condomning Eritrea’s action of restricting the free air and land transport of the peace force and the number of detentions it made over the locally recruited UN staffs.

UNMEE was established after Ethiopia and Eritrea signed an Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities on 18 June 2000 in Algiers, Algeria. The two countries had gone to war in May 1998 because of a border dispute.

Speaking over situation in Kenya ban ki- moon said Kenyan government, opposition group leaders, clan leaders and concerned bodies must collectively seat and talk to find a way out of the post – election chaos, which turned down the positive Democratic history of the nation.

Further more he has expressed his concern over the harsh consequence of violence people in Darfur are facing and called on responsible bodies to stop civilian targeted violence.

The UN is getting to be irrelevant to the interest of the many members of the planet and catering to the “Rich and Super Powers,”who control the destiny of the so many,”were clear international laws are overruled for sheer political economical, strategical reasons regardless of the law. the superpowers scratching each others back are compromising justice to promote their interests especially in the resources rich continent of Africa. Rwanda,Eritrea-Ethiopia,Darfur,Congo,Somalia and Kenya the law of the planet is simple and manageble, but the so called super powers have made life so miserable for Africa out of sheer greed to make life comfortable and prosperous at home that the the third world is nothing less than a gold mine to be exploited to the fullest solely for the interest of the west. The colonial “Divide and Rule” might have changed it’s game but it is still here creating havoc in Rwanda,Congo,Sudan,Eritrea-Ethiopia,Somalia…etc.Wake up Africa the UN is just the long arm of the “Super Powers” who broker the destiny of the many wretched of the earth.
