Sudanese protester shot dead during commemoration protests
June 3, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – A protester was shot dead by security forces on Friday, during a demonstration to commemorate the third anniversary of the bloody repression of sit-inners outside the army headquarters in Khartoum in June 2019.
Despite regional and international calls, the security forces used excessive force to disperse the marches firing live bullets and tear gas on the demonstrators. One protester was killed and several others wounded.
A protester died from bullet wounds to the chest as the coup forces opened intense fire on the protesters at Station 7 in Al-Sahafa suburb of Khartoum city, said the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) on Friday.
With the death of Ahmed Abdallah aka Halawa, at least 99 protesters have been killed and hundreds of others injured during the anti-coup protests.
Demonstrations to commemorate the bloody dispersal of the pro-democracy sit-in were organized in other states including Al Jazirah, Red Sea Gedaref, and South Darfur.
The Sudanese police issued three statements to justify the violent crackdown on protesters claiming that the security forces had to defend themselves.
In two statements the police said that the protesters attacked the police stations and sought to burn it.
In the third statement about the dispersal of demonstrations, the police said that the protesters threw stones at the security forces.
The police did not mention the killing of a protester in Station 7 but said that the police intercepted a mob heading to attack the police statement.
“A group of protesters moved from Station 7 (area) to attack the police station of Al-Sahafa, their number was estimated at about 150 people, most of whom were minors. The security forces dealt with them and managed to disperse them”.
In response to Halawa’s killing, the Resistance Committees in different neighbourhoods of Khartoum state released statements declaring their determination to continue to oppose the military rule.
The activists released several videos showing the violent repression of the protesters by the security forces.
The UN expert on human rights in Sudan is visiting the Sudanese capital nowadays. On Friday morning he posted a tweet calling to refrain from the use of excessive force against protesters.
