June 15, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The number of Sudanese refugees who have fled their country to escape violence has reached 822,825, a U.N. refugee agency said on Wednesday.

According to a report by the UNHCR, Chad hosts some 388,550 Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers who fled violence in the Darfur region.

Some of them have moved to Chad since the launch of the counterinsurgency campaign of 2003.

In South Sudan, there are 311,837 Sudanese generally from the Two Areas, the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.

While Egypt hosts 56,100 Sudanese from different parts of the country. Many seek relocation to Europe, America and Australia. The report did not mention the numerous Sudanese who are settled in Egypt.
The refugee agency said that 47,179 Sudanese refugees are in Ethiopia.

Also, 18,675 refugees from Sudan are in Libya. Many of them seek to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

The Central African Republic hosts some 395 refugees while there are 89 Sudanese in Eritrea.

Despite the collapse of the al-Bashir regime, Sudanese continue to flee to neighbouring Chad due to the tribal attacks by the Arab militia.

Refugees from Blue Nile state in South Sudan and Ethiopia do see any significant change on the ground to encourage their return as the military coup and the lack of money delayed the repatriation program.

While the lack of peace in South Kordofan, also does not encourage refugees to return home despite the continued unilateral cessation of hostilities in the region.
