July 25, 2022 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s presidential advisor on security affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime has ruled out resigning from government following his brother’s assassination in Mayom County of South Sudan’s Unity State.

On 22 July 2022, an armed group attacked the home of Mayom County commissioner, James Chuol Gatluak Manime, killing him and all his guards.

Speaking to mourners on Sunday, Manime said was shaken over the matter.

“For two days, I did not know what to say. I did not know what to do.  I made two options. First of all, the first option I said was that I will from Monday resign from the government so that I can go and follow the issue of my brother. The second option, I said I am responsible for peace, maybe this is the exam and test which God has given to test how I will handle this situation. So I said, if the death of my brother will be the solution to the problem of South Sudan, then it will be good for everyone”, he said.

The aide ruled out more bloodshed, instead opting for peaceful dialogue.

“I cannot accept more bloodshed anymore in a Unity State. If the killing of my elder brother could totally bring peace and stability to the people of Mayom and South Sudan in general then let be done”, stressed Manime.

He also forgave those who killed his brother and the other civilians affected.

“I need to assure you that President Salva Kiir has given the assurance of support and responsibility. This has helped console me and the others. The test of peace is not easy. It is hard and challenging,” said Kiir’s advisor.

A rebel group, calling itself South Sudan People’s Movement (SSPM) claimed responsibility for the killing, threatening more attacks in the oil-producing region.
