UN condemns attacks in Unity State, urges peaceful dialogue
July 27, 2022 (JUBA) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has condemned the spate of recent attacks in Unity State, urging authorities to pursue peaceful means of averting the military conflict in the oil-rich region.
“The UN Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, condemns the attack on Friday, 22 July, on Mayom County, Unity State, resulting in the death of several people including the Mayom County Commissioner”, noted a statement issued on Wednesday.
The UN said it received reports that South Sudan People’s Movement/Army, a group led by Gen. Stephen Buay Rolnyang, claimed responsibility for the attacks.
“Subnational violence has already had a devastating effect on communities. We appeal to all armed groups to put down their weapons and participate in peace efforts. This is the only way to break the cycles of violence and revenge killings, and pave the way for durable and sustainable peace,” explained Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan.
The top UN official, however, said the mission would continue to closely monitor the security situation in Mayom County and support the peace process.
UNMISS currently has a base in Bentiu, Unity State’s administrative headquarters.
Mayom, one of the remote counties in South Sudan has, in recent years, been a scene of armed activities and experiences cross-border cattle raiding activities.
