August 8, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo aka “Hemetti” Sunday, rejected Chadian claims that Sudanese herders looted camels from Chad before revenge raids by Chadian gunmen who killed 18 Sudanese in West Darfur.

A spokesperson from the Chadian component of Sudanese-Chadian joint forces on Saturday accused Sudanese from West Darfur of rustling five camels, triggering attacks by Chadian owners of the stolen livestock.

However, Hemetti dismissed the statement of the Chadian military spokesman during a visit to the families of the victims in the Abu Srooj area of West Darfur.

“The statement made by the representative of the joint forces from the Chadian side contained misleading information,” he said.

“There are those who sow discord between the brothers in the two States and want to use this incident to damage the relations between the two countries,” he further said.

The deputy chair of the Sovereign Council underscored that the Chadian government has taken security measures to recover the looted camels and arrest the perpetrators.

He added that the head of the Chadian Military Council is cooperating with the Sudanese government.

He further acknowledged that the Sudanese government has not done enough to control but announced that the Defence and Security Council has taken new measures to deploy troops along the border in a recent emergency meeting held after the attacks.

Also, he called for self-restraint and stressed that the authorities are determined to prevent the repetition of such attacks.

Following the attacks, the Darfur Arab leaders called to close the border with Chad and deploy troops along the border, saying they want to be treated in the same way as the Fashaga area after the attacks of Ethiopian militiamen.

They also blamed Hemetti’s Rapid Support Forces (SRF) for not intervening to deter the assailants bringing him to say that they are Sudanese and such decisions should be taken by the government not him personally.
