EU-Troika diplomats to Sudan condemn attack on traditional constitutional workshop
August 11, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – European Union and Troika diplomats to Khartoum on Wednesday condemned the attack on a workshop on a new transitional declaration and expressed their support for the ongoing efforts to restore a civilian transitional government in Sudan.
A group of men armed with batons and knives stormed the premises of the Sudanese Bar Association in Khartoum to disrupt a workshop on transitional constitutional arrangements.
The assailants were led by some known lawyers and members of the banned National Congress Party of the ousted regime.
In a separate statement, the EU in Sudan stressed that “Violence is never the answer”.
The Embassies of Troika (Norway, United Kingdom, United States) strongly condemn yesterday’s attempts to disrupt through violence the Sudanese Bar Association workshop on a framework for transitional constitutional arrangements.
“The EU has been and will remain unwavering supporter of Sudan’s unique attempt at a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” added the statement.
The Troika countries also voiced their genuine support for an intra-Sudanese dialogue to establish a “credible civilian-led transitional government with broad-based support, and a clear roadmap to elections”.
Following the military coup and the dissolution of the civilian-led government, wanted Sudanese Islamist leaders appeared publically after supporting the coup.
Also, they held a series of demonstrations against the UNITAMS which is designed as the symbol of foreign intervention in Sudan.
On Wednesday, the attackers shouted slogans against Volker Perthes UNITAMS head.
