S. Sudan opposition group backs Jonglei State workers’ strike
August 14, 2022 (BOR) – A South Sudanese opposition group has urged payment of salary arrears for civil servants in Jonglei State, saying strikes and demonstrations are constitutional and labour rights to be respected.
Civil servants in Jonglei are on a sit-down strike over unpaid salary arrears.
Ibrahim Dhieu, the spokesperson of the Jonglei Workers’ Trade Union accused the state government of misusing funds meant to pay their arrears.
The Real SPLM, in a statement on Saturday, stood in solidarity with workers.
“We warm the ruling regime at the national and state level against the violation of these rights and government should seize and desist from using violence and threatening the people of South Sudan when they exercise their rights,” partly reads the statement extended to Sudan Tribune.
The group, led by former ruling party (SPLM) Secretary General Pagan Amum the government to “immediately” pay the workers’ salary arrears.
Meanwhile, the state Information minister John Samuel Manyuon on Friday vowed they would work with the state workers’ union to address their salary demands.
