66 persons killed, thousands of houses destroyed by floods across Sudan

August 15, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The death toll from floods and rains in Sudan has raised to (66) following heavy rains across the country, according to Sudanese officials, last Monday.

Some Sudanese states yearly suffer from deadly floods and rains in August and September causing loss of lives and properties as people accuse the government of not taking enough protective measures before the session of rains.

“As a result of floods, 66 persons died and other 28 injured,” said the National Council for Civil Defender in a statement seen by “Sudan Tribune on Monday.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the rains and floods destroyed completely 8,900 houses and 20,600 partly.

The floods, also, swept 238 health facilities and 1,560 water sources and damaged 5,200 Fadan (18.9 km) of farming lands.

OCHA estimated that ” Nearly 134,000 persons affected by rains and floods across Sudan since the beginning of the session and up to 14 August.

The report considered River Nile, South and North Kordofan and South Darfur states are the most affected areas by rains and floods.

It projects that nearly 460.000 persons will be affected by floods and rains this year compared to 314,500 persons affected in 2021.
