Agar, Arman agree on “amicable split” of SPLM-N
August 18, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Two leaders of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North Malik Agar and Yasir Arman announced an “amicable split” between their two factions after cracks over the October 25 military coup.
After the coup, Arman had been arrested by the junta and remained in jail for more than a month as he was a political adviser for the then Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok. While he joined the anti-coup camp after his release, Agar preferred to work for peace in his natal area, the Blue Nile region.
The rift widened further between the two comrades when Agar criticized the Forces for Freedom and Change, the anti-coup protesters and recently the movement’s members who participate in the FFC meetings.
In a short co-signed statement, the two leaders announced they agreed to separate, admitting their failure to reach a consensus over conflicting issues.
“After a thorough and in-depth discussion characterized by transparency and frankness, the two parties concluded that issues of disagreement are fundamental and deep, and it is difficult to agree on them,” read the joint statement.
” The two sides agreed not to consume their energy in unproductive disputes (…) and to separate amicably,” further read the statement.
The meeting was brokered by the leader of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front Hadi Idris who hosted the meeting in his home in Khartoum.
Hadi had previously gathered the two leaders in the first meeting he convened, according to the statement. The date was not mentioned.
Agar had been severely criticized on social media for his statements against the anti-coup protests.
Also, the SPLM-N secretary called for an emergency conference meeting to discuss the recent statements of its leader and take a clear stance against the coup.
While Buthaina Dinar a leading member of the group and Federal Government Minister resigned from her position to express her rejection of the coup.
Malik Agar issued a statement, on Thursday evening, calling on his supporters to focus their efforts to build the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North/Revolutionary Front.
