Sudan to train South Sudanese security forces, says official
August 18, 2022 (JUBA) – Sudan will assist in training South Sudanese security forces to graduate from cantonment sites as part of the country’s necessary unified forces, an official disclosed on Thursday.
Tut Gatluak Manime, a presidential advisor on security, said preparations are in advanced stages to pass out the first batch of forces from cantonment sites.
“Preparations to pass the first batch of the forces in the cantonment sites have reached advanced stage. We are finalizing in preparation for graduation later this month,” the aide said on Thursday.
He disclosed that the graduation of the first batch will be on August 30, 2022.
“God willing, the first batch will be graduated on the 30th of this month. The leaders have agreed and they have set the date. Uniform and the food have delivered. The food items for greater Equatoria have been delivered. The one for Bahr el Ghazal is on the way and will come in the coming days,” said Manime.
He added, “Some places in Bahr el Ghazal have already received uniforms and food”.
Neighbouring Sudan, according to the aide, pledged to train members of the national security, police and military personnel, including their officers.
“Our brothers in Sudan will help with the training of our security forces so that we fast track transformation of these forces into professional service men and women. They will good training, good one”, he further stressed.
Sudan is one of the guarantors of the peace deal that ended South Sudan’s bloody civil war that killed more than 400,000 people and displaced millions.
The peace deal calls for the establishment of unified forces made up of 83,000 soldiers to take charge of security during the transitional period. The parties agreed to graduate 50,000 forces in the first phase.
