Military leaders show willingness to consult with Sudanese stakeholders on dialogue process

August 29, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemetti” the Deputy Head of the Sovereign Council expressed on Monday their willingness to consult with the various stakeholders over the intra-Sudanese dialogue.

On July 4, the military component announced their withdrawal from the political process to allow the formation of a civilian government. Following what, the military-led Sovereign Council would be dissolved as they proposed to replace it with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

“The military component is ready to hold consultative meetings with the parties on the ongoing efforts to launch the intra-Sudanese dialogue,”  said Hemetti in a statement by the Sovereign Council.

He stressed the purpose of these consultative meetings is to reach a national consensus on the completion of the democratic transition general elections by the end of the transitional period.

Previously the military component formed a joined transitional authority with the Forces for Freedom and Change in accordance with a power-sharing agreement in August 2019.

However, before the end of the three-year transition, the military component with the support of some armed groups overthrew the civilian-led government.

The supporters of the former regime hailed the coup and showed strong support for the military leaders.

Hemetti said the military component was keen to realize the aspirations of the people for security and stability by cooperating with the parties to overcome any difficulties hindering the transition.

“He called on all the revolution’s and national forces to expedite efforts to reach urgent solutions that lead to the formation of institutions and structures of a civilian transitional government”.

Meeting with UNITAMS

On the same day, Sovereign Council Member Yasir al-Atta met with UNITAMS Head Volker Perthes.

The meeting was “Part of ongoing efforts to identify a way forward to move towards a credible democratic transition,” said UNITAMS in a tweet posted after the meeting.
