March 9, 2008 (JUBA) — The Chairman of SPLM, Salva Kiir Mayardit, on February 6, ordered all members of African National Front (ANF) student’s movement in Sudanese Universities to disband and immediately join SPLM Students League.
Kiir said if there are SPLM affiliated students who need to continue under ANF, they are free to exercise their democratic right as long as they no longer link their student activities to the SPLM.
The SPLM chairman noted with dismay that there are some members of ANF who are strongly opposed to be affiliated into SPLM student’s league and are now orchestrating friction between student’s organizations. He added that such kind of disunity would not be allowed to continue because that SPLM would not like to encourage division among its rank.
The statement emphasized that after signing of the CPA, the SPLM leadership had expected ANF students affiliated to the movement at various institutions to immediately transform into or join the SPLM Students League. Although some students have already joined and are working under SPLM Student League, transformation process has been very slow compounded with some hidden agenda.
The order reads “In exercise of power conferred upon me under article 19(c) of the SPLM Interim Basic Rules and Regulations 2006, and after careful consideration of the recommendations of the SPLM fact finding committee on this matter and in light of the on going transformation of the SPLM from a military organization to a national political party ,I general Salva Kiir Mayardit, SPLM Chairman, do hereby issued and order directing all SPLM affiliated students in the ANF to immediately join the SPLM Student Legue and to stop forthwith undertaking any programmes or activities in the ANF using the SPLM name with effect from 4th March 2008.”
During the 21 years of liberation struggle, students affiliated to the SPLM/A movement were then operating under the name of ANF for the sake of protecting their own security.
The SPLM boss appreciates the efforts of the students to promoting the vision and objectives of the movement through various means of disseminating to Sudanese masses during the hardest time of the struggle especially inside the government controlled areas.
The current Vice-President of GoSS, Riek Machar is one of the founding members of the ANF. He was at one time the chairman of the ANF when he was student in Khartoum University. Later ANF transforms its objectives to gendering SPLM cause under the same name.
Among the founding members of ANF was the current Vice-President of GoSS Riek Machar, who was at one time the chairman of ANF when he was a student in Khartoum University.
