Sudan’s military leaders reaffirm commitment to civilian government

September 15, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The chairman of the Sovereign Council Thursday and his deputy renewed their commitment not to participate in the transitional authority in a meeting held with the ambassadors of the Quad countries on Thursday.

The meeting with the USA, UK, Saudi Arabia and UAE comes on the eve of al-Burhan’s travel to participate in the meetings of the General Assembly of the United Nations, where he is expected to present an explanation of his vision about the role of the army in the next government.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo Hemetti discussed with the four diplomats ways to end the political stalemate and the formation of a government to achieve the tasks of the transition and prepare for general elections.

Sources close to the meeting told Sudan Tribune that al-Burhan affirmed his commitment to the withdrawal of the military component from the upcoming transitional government.

he further indicated they want to agree with the political forces over the powers of a separate military council they plan to form to deal with the security issues and national defence.

It is worth mentioning that the constitutional proposals made by the Sudanese Bar Association which are largely welcomed, call for a national security council headed by a civilian leader.

In a related development, a leading member of the Forces for Freedom and Change told Sudan Tribune that they had not been invited to the meeting between the military leaders and the Quad diplomats

Also, he dismissed reports about a meeting with two members of the military component Gen. Shams al-Din Kabbashi and Gen. Ibrahim Jabir.

“This report is completely inaccurate,” he said.
