U.S condemns killing of aid worker in South Sudan

September 20, 2022 (JUBA) – The United States embassy in South Sudan has strongly condemned the recent killing of a humanitarian worker in Unity State.

Dr. Daniel Deng Gatluak, a World Health Organisation (WHO) health worker, was killed in the Unity State capital, Bentiu on September 19.

The U.S embassy, in a statement, urged protection of workers delivering valuable and life-saving services to help people, including the most vulnerable people in the country.

“We call on the government to create a safer environment for aid and humanitarian workers, and to bring to justice perpetrators of violence”, partly reads the statement.

Nearly 150 aid workers, it said, have been killed in South Sudan since 2013.

The young nation, according to the Humanitarian Outcomes Aid Worker Security Database, continues to be one of the deadliest places to be an aid worker.
