KHARTOUM, October 3, 2022 – The Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) said it is seeking to sign a joint political agreement with the SPLM-North led by Abdel Aziz Al-Hilu (SPLM-N al Hilu) and Sudan Liberation Movement of Abdel Wahid al-Nur (SLM-AW).

The SCP held talks in Juba and Kauda with the SLM-AW and SPLM-N al Hilu las May to form a new political alliance, as the party see them as potential allies that can agree with them to achieve a “radical change” in Sudan.

These faltered, however, as the SLM-AW stipulated the need to form an inclusive alliance while the SPLM-N said they are engaged in a political process with the military rulers in Khartoum and cannot commit themselves to the proposed alliance.

The SCP Spokesman Fatehi Fadl told Sudan Tribune they are still striving to forge this alliance with the two non-signatory groups as their position is in harmony with the line of the Sudanese communists.

The Party “seeks to conduct a deeper dialogue than the one that took place during the past months with al-Hilu and al-Nur to sign a political agreement in the near future,” Fadl said.

He confirmed they have been approached by various anti-coup political forces to discuss ways to work together to bring down the military rule and restore a civilian transitional government in Sudan.

Fadl nonetheless ruled out the signing of a political deal with the Forces for Freedom and Change in the future.

“Their announced programs and most of their party leaders are an integral part of the political settlement that is being proposed these days,” he said.

The Communist Party refuses to hold any dialogue with the FFC coalition. But its leaders said they are ready to meet separately with its components as political parties.

In addition, the radical left party rejects a draft transitional constitution proposed by the Bar Association Steering Committee, despite national and international support.
