October 10, 2022 (NAIROBI) – The spokesperson for South Sudan’s United Front/Army (SSUF/A), Col. Phillip Deng Kuol has accused the head of the country’s security service of threatening his life.

“Over passed [sic] couple of months, our intelligent dug it out that, I myself along with 5 other military officers within SSUF/A were enumerated in a certain list through the directives of spy chief Gen. Akol Koor ordering to hunt us down. As a matter of fact, I have been actually many times threatened by strange callers, threatening my life,” Kuol said in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Tuesday.

He described the act as a “pure violation” of the Rome talks between South Sudan government and the hold-out groups, mediated by the Sant’Egidio community.

“So, this is a pure violation of the Rome Peace Talks. It’s also consisted in one of 15-points of the Declaration of Principal (DoP) we had inked in Naivasha that all opposition officials are free from arrest by national security institutions in Juba,” stressed Kuol.

Sudan Tribune could not independently verify the SSUF/A spokesperson’s claims.

In March last year, the government of South Sudan and the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) faction led by General Paul Malong and Pagan Amum signed a DoP agreement in Naivasha, Kenya. The document tackles issues ranging from land administration, eradication of divisive policies, constitutionalism, federalism, good governance, rule of law, proper management of state resources, professionalization of the law enforcement agencies, public service reforms among others.
