Ethiopia-election debate organized by Inter Africa Group kicks off

March 23, 2008 (BAHIR DAR) — Election debate organized by Inter Africa Group, a non governmental organization, started in 12 towns, including Addis Ababa.

The debate among the parties comes after; Inter Africa group receives permission from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia to organize debates in Bahirdar, Harrar, Hossaena, Diredawa, Adama, Gimbi, Woldia, Dubti,Awassa, Wolayita Sodo, Ambo and Addis Ababa.

On Saturday two political parties, namely Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM/EPRDF) and the Ethiopian Democratic Unity Party (EDUP-Medhin), held debate in Bahir Dar City of the Amhara State.

Representatives from both political parties presented their respective views and agendas at the half-day political debate organized by the Group.

The debate will continue in different towns till March 22 to April 6, 2008.

Some 19 political parties which are registered to take part on the upcoming local and national by-election are expected to participate in the debates where they promote programs to inhabitants.

Inter Africa Group has been exerting efforts to help consolidate democratic institutions in the country and cultivate dialogue on policy matters.

During the 2000 and 2005 elections the group has organized similar debate forums.

Some 28 political parties and over 2 million candidates will take part on next months local and national by- election
