Umma Party leadership in Egypt for talks with Egyptian officials

October 15, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – A high-level delegation from the National Umma Party (NUP) travelled to Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the NUP General Secretariat said the visit came at the invitation of the Egyptian government.

The delegation will discuss “joint cooperation on issues of shared concern by the two people,” further said the party without further details.

Led by Fadlallah Burma, the NUP acting Chairman, the delegation includes Abdel-Mahmoud Abu Secretary-General of the Ansar religious sect, the two Vice-Presidents Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and Siddiq Mohamed Ismail, al-Watheq Al-Brerair, NUP Secretary General, and Mohamed al-Mahdi Hassan, Head of the Political Bureau.

The visit takes place as the Forces for Freedom and Change are negotiating with the military leaders on the restoration of a civilian government in Sudan.

The ongoing talks have been facilitated by the Trilateral Mechanism and the QUAD countries including the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the U.S.

When approached to join the QUAD after the coup d’état, the Egyptian leadership declined to take part in the group.

On Saturday, the Egyptian foreign ministry said that Hani Salah, Director of the Sudan and South Sudan Department held a virtual meeting with Peter Lord,  U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa,  to discuss the ongoing efforts to settle the Sudanese crisis.

Salah assured the U.S. official that Egypt is standing at the same distance from all Sudanese parties and reiterated its respect for the will of the Sudanese people.

Egypt “Looks forward that the UN efforts will yield common ground for the establishment of a constructive dialogue between the various Sudanese components,” said the Egyptian foreign ministry.
