Sudanese police investigating death of man in custody

October 15, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese police said on Thursday that they are investing circumstances under which a man died in custody in the capital, Khartoum.

The police, in a statement released on 14 October, confirmed that Kamal Mudathir died “while in custody” on the same day that he was arrested by the country’s security forces.

Security forces arrested Kamal on October 11 and his body was found at a mortuary.

The police, in their statement, said that “the necessary legal procedures were taken and the body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary to identify the reason for his death”.

It added, “for the sake of transparency and being neutral, the investigation was handed over to the prosecutor’s office”.

A lawyers’ group said the deceased was tortured to death in police custody and his body showed signs of torture.

Activists and Kamal’s family said that the deceased would not be buried until authorities issue “transparent autopsy findings” after accusing “the coup’s forces” of killing him.

Security forces in Sudan have been accused of killing of nearly 120 people during the anti-government protests that started immediately after the coup of October 25, 2021.
