Sudanese Bar Association's Steering Committee hands over proposal on transitional constitutional arrangements to the tripartite mechanism on September 10, 2022

November 3, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Troika countries condemned the attack on the office of the Sudanese Bar Association (SBA) and called on the military-led government to take the needed measures for an inclusive political dialogue.

The banned National Congress Party of Omer al-Bashir and several Sudanese Islamist groups that backed the coup military leaders demonstrated six days ago to show their opposition to any deal based on proposals made by the SBA Steering Committee.

On Wednesday November 2, Islamist lawyers attacked the office of the Bar association following a decision by an appeal committee formed by the Sovereign Council on October 31.

The Ambassadors of the Troika on Thursday condemned the attack against the Sudanese Bar Association (SBA) in Khartoum and called on the government to “create conditions conducive for an inclusive political dialogue”.

The Troika pointed out that this attack appears to be directed to derail efforts to hold an inclusive dialogue to form a new civilian government to achieve reforms paving the way for democratic rule in Sudan.

“The Troika stands against those who refuse to accept the Sudanese people’s calls for freedom, peace, and justice and who thwart progress towards a political agreement and civilian-led government,” said the joint statement.

“Any attacks on freedom of speech and assembly are unacceptable,” further stressed the Troika envoys.

The Islamist groups have slammed the efforts of the Troika, QUAD and the Trilateral Mechanism to bring an end to the protracted political crisis in Sudan.

The Emergency Lawyers confirmed on Thursday that the police continue to besiege the SBA office in Khartoum and prevent access to lawyers inside the building or to provide them with food.

A member of the Steering committee, Amjed al-Jalabi denounced the reinstatement of the pro-Islamist Bar committee by the Sovereign Council appeal committee saying its decision has no legal value.

“The constitutionally formed Sovereign Council has been overthrown by the coup. The decisions of this appeal committee formed by the coup leader are caduceus because they have no legitimacy to do so,” al-Jalabi said.
