November 8, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The Vice-President of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Mohamed Alhassan al-Mirghani on Tuesday signed the political declaration setting out the framework for the transitional constitution that would be endorsed by the political forces and the military component.

Having been the first political party to take this step, the DUP faction of Alhassan al-Mirghani publically marks its difference with another faction led by his brother Gaffer who coordinates with the National Consensus Forces (NCF) of Minni Minnawi and Gibril Ibrahim.

“The signature reaffirms the unity and cohesion of the civil bloc to achieve a transition leading to the desired democratic change”, reads a short statement issued by the office of the DUP Vice-President.

The party also released a picture of Alhassan signing the declaration and the DUP Political Secretary Ibrahim al-Mirghani sitting beside him. The latter had been relieved from his position by Gaffar several days ago.

The DUP leader Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani will return to Khartoum from Cairo on November 15. His first task would be to settle the rift between his sons and preserve the unity of the party.

The Acting Chairman of the National Umma Party Fadlallah Burma confirmed on Tuesday that the military component signed the draft transitional constitution proposed by the Sudanese Bar Association.

In statements to Aljazeera, Burma added that the military component demanded that the document be “national” and inclusive.

Commenting on a copy of the draft political declaration seen by Sudan Tribune, several political leaders of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) said that this version was still a draft until its endorsement by all the parties.

The draft declaration reaffirms several principles such as the citizenship state, civil state, separation between state and religion, accountability and transitional justice, independence of the judiciary, and one national and professional army.

Also, the text provides to repeal the constitutional declaration of 2019 and review the decisions issued after October 25, 2022  coup.
